The Clairol Company was established by Larry Gelb, a chemist from New York who set off to Europe to find a new product to launch in America. There he discovered a superior hair color product and instant oil shampoo tint, which he brought back to the US and forever changed the look of Americans.
In 1962, the first edition of the definitive «Clairol Professional Encyclopedia of Haircoloring» was published. Since then, generations of hairdressers have become master colorists with the aid of this authoritative reference on haircolor theory, products and application techniques.
The continual development of new categories of products created new coloring services for salons to offer their clients, including permanent haircolors with complete grey coverage, hair lightening products and toning colors.
In the 90's, Clairol Professional expanded its offerings and client base with the introduction of «Textures and Tones», a permanent haircolor line developed specifically to complement the skin tones of Africa-American women.
Clairol Professional continued its flair for innovation, proposing new technolgies in Premium crème, while scientists developed a method to reduce free radical damage and copper blocking to improve color uptake and hair-color quality.
Clairol Professional brought their expertise to more of the world with the launch of their full service portfolio in the Latin American and Asian salon markets.
